CBD for Pets: Is It Safe?

A recent survey has shown that 1 in 7 American adults use CBD products. It is most commonly used to relieve pain, reduce anxiety, and improve sleep. CBD is especially popular given that, unlike THC (another well-known cannabinoid), it does not produce a ‘high’ and is touted for its therapeutic benefits.

This nonpsychoactive chemical is not only popular among humans but is also commonly given to pets. While CBD for pets is a relatively new phenomenon, there is evidence that it can provide a range of benefits to dogs, cats, and other family pets.

In this blog post, we will look at what is CBD, CBD for pets, and how safe it is for your four-legged friends.

How Can CBD Benefit Your Pets?

Pets, like humans, suffer from health-related conditions such as cardiovascular issues, cancer, and seizures. They can also suffer from stress and anxiety, whether caused by moving home or being introduced to new pets in the family.

The potential benefits of giving CBD to your pet include:

  • Reduction in pain
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Immune system support
  • Reduction in seizures
  • Gastrointestinal support
  • Cardiovascular system support
  • Nervous system support
  • Reduction in stress and anxiety

When properly dosed, CBD cannot get your pet ‘high’. If you give CBD to your pet, it’s important to keep a close eye out for a potentially negative reaction.

Is CBD Safe to Give to Your Pets?

While research is ongoing with regard to the effectiveness and safety of CBD for both humans and pets, there have to date been a number of positive studies.

One such study, from 2018, assessed the safety, anti-pain, and anti-inflammatory properties of CBD for dogs. In the study, 80% of dogs displayed an improvement in their mobility and pain.

Another study, this one from 2019, found that dogs that received CBD in addition to seizure medication experienced far fewer seizures than those that received seizure medication alone.

While this research and others are positive, it is important that further studies are undertaken, both in humans and animals. The FDA has not yet approved any CBD products for use in animals, whether as food or as a drug. If you are considering giving CBD to your pet, you should first consult with your veterinarian.

CBD for Pets: The Bottom Line

Research to date has shown that CBD is both effective and safe to give to your pet. Cannabidiol oil can help with a range of physical and mental issues that may be affecting your pet.

Cat and dog CBD is increasingly popular in the United States. It is best to start with a small dose and closely monitor your pet’s reaction if you decide to give them CBD.
