5 Effective Ways To Develop New Learning Skills

When it comes to teaching in a class, an educator must realize that the learning process should be individualistic and not the same for everyone. For example, some students may be better at interacting with a group, while others may be better at working alone. This article will provide you with some strategies to help your students with their studies.

Create A Better Learning Environment:

One can help a student concentrate better by changing the physical layout of the classroom. A teacher may help organize the classroom into workstations; this will require you to move around the furniture to support individual and group work. Each learning station should use a unique method to teach skills or concepts related to its course. For example, students can rotate between stations that involve:

  • Watching a video
  • Creating an artwork
  • Completing a puzzle
  • Reading a story

Prepare Learning Lessons In Advance: Before you begin teaching students, you should examine their past assessments, collect student data and work samples to determine the specific learning interests of each student. An early assessment helps you change the teaching process by assigning different tasks to different students. For example, a teacher may employ a differentiated instruction method by tailoring exercises to meet each student’s interests, requirements, and strengths.

Interview Your Students: By asking questions about reading and learning styles, you can find out the doubts of the students. When administering the learning station, take each student aside and discuss their problems. Ask them about:

  • Their favorite lessons.
  • Their favorite interactive exercises.
  • In which subject they are facing a problem.
  • Which type of exercises help them to remember the key lesson points.
  • Which projects they are most proud of.

Modify Your Teaching Technique:  One way to change the learning process is to switch the content you use in class while teaching. For example, during a lecture on Shakespearean drama, some students may be inattentive or find it hard to relate to the complex study topic. Use audio and videos to modify the teaching method, or you may even make it an interactive course by letting individuals perform scenes from the drama. The differentiated instruction learning method requires strategic planning, but a teacher can accommodate students’ learning styles with continuous evaluation. For example, if the lesson focuses on sight, touch, and hearing, rather than just one feeling, then it should resonate with more students rather than one. Use different learning methods according to your student needs:

  • Play videos, use infographics, provide audiobooks.
  • Get students to act out a scene.
  • Incorporate charts and illustrations within texts.
  • Provide oral and written instructions for homework.
  • Use relevant physical objects as examples, such as money, when teaching math skills.
  • Allot time for students to create artistic reflections and interpretations of lessons.

Run Literature Circles: Organizing students into literature circles encourages them to promote mutual understanding of reading and helps learners retain more information. Literature circles will allow you to listen to the criticisms of each group, ask questions and fill gaps in understanding.
